To Shri Tarun Gogoi Hon’ble Chief Minister Government of Assam Dishpur, Assam
Sub: Memorandum requesting the protection of life and property of ethnic Gorkhas in Assam
Hon’ble Sir,
With deep anguish and heavy hearts we are placing before you the following facts for your immediate intervention:
1. That the Gorkhas had been considered the exemplary citizens of India who had never flinched once to lay down their lives to protect the sanctity and sovereignty of the country. 2. That on the evening of 10th September, 2008 a group of armed extremists reportedly belonging to Dima Alandaoda (Joel group) opened indiscriminate shooting at the unsuspecting Gorkha people in Kamala Tea Estate in North Cachhar Hills, Assam. The attacked people were completely unarmed and there was no provocation whatsoever for the attack. This heinous crime has left two people namely, Tanka Chhetri and Dipak Chhetri dead and four others seriously injured while the whole Gorkha population of the area are extremely terrified. 3. That, just before the said attack, a group of policeman of the nearby Mahur area visited the victims and informed them about the possibility of such attack. But it was too late and it was not possible for the innocent, peace loving people to make arrangements for their own protection. However, it shows that the police had information about the attack, but still they didn’t show any interest to protect the minority Gorkha people. 4. That, over the past few years such attacks on the Gorkha people have been repeated time and again in Assam forcing all the conscientious citizens to question the treatments meted out to the minorities especially the Gorkhas in your state. Such xenophobia and atrocity perpetrated by the fundamentalists of any group is detrimental to the National interest. 5. That we the Gorkhas are in a crucial stage of our struggle for a separate state of Gorkhaland. In such a juncture of time, when emotions are running high the attacks on our people may be contrary to the unity of the country and it is the duty of the Government to protect the life and property of all its citizens irrespective of caste, colour and religion.
Therefore, we request your good office that all the culprits be brought to book soon, the victims’ families given due compensation and above all do the needful so that such unfortunate incidents do not recur in future. With regards Yours sincerely
Bimal Gurung
President Gorkha Janmukti Morcha |
